I’m have never drawn highlights from my week, but always wanted to do this. I feel if I try it will look like I’m copying you for example or someone else’s work just because of the fact that I never do it. I love the look of the snippets and thought of it. I also think I might be afraid to because I’m not confident in that type of composition and afraid it will look bad or silly. Too much in my head I guess!
To begin with you may find it easier to create boxes with a simple HB pencil and find very simple images you could add to illustrate your week. It can be very simple shapes, like a circle for an orange (or lots of small ones for blueberries), a chair, a slice of cake, a pattern you've seen, a leaf, ... keep it simple but yes, doing it and no over thinking is key to get started. Also, maybe try by copying a few times and keep it private (we all learn from others), then when you're a bit more at ease, start sharing if you wish. No one has to share their journals ever anyway! As part of the club subscription, I'm offering a co-journaling session each month which you're welcome to take part in, perfect way to play and get it out of your head.
Thanks so much Helen! These are all great suggestions and I will try them for sure. Sometimes the answer is right in front of us and we don’t see it! I think breaking g it down into small and simpler steps might be the best, it makes me feel more comfortable already!
I’ve been working so far every time you had a co-journaling, but I’m sure it will work out soon. I can’t wait!
I find your weekly journals so interesting! I’ve been thinking a lot about daily journaling but weekly is probably a lot more manageable 🤔 but how does one pick only enough highlights to fit into one spread? Or do you occasionally use multiple spreads for one week?
I have taken entire sketchbooks on trips (for example Italy and didn’t do my weekly journal until I came back - that’s what I was focusing on during our club’s co-journaling session).
It’s definitely a challenge worth taking on! It’s interesting because only having one spread per week really encourages reflection and thoughtfulness. And that limitation actually sparks new creativity. A bit like limiting colour palettes.
I would really like to keep a visual journal of my weeks like you Helen, they are so inspiring, and a wonderful way to slow down and reflect. For me, I “feel” like all I do is work (😬), so if I’m going to journal about my week, it’s a good excuse to get away from my desk and find the small things to appreciate. I’d like to make a conscious effort at noticing and practicing drawing in this way…. I also struggle with perfectionism, but you’re right - I don’t need to share the entries, they can be just for me!

The next one will be announced in the gazette 1st October. Keep your eyes peeled!
Since January 2023, every evening before going to bed, I draw a summary of my day.
That is very, very cool!!! I love that!

The key is to just start and not dwell on imperfection! And then just keep showing up!
I just got a new sketchbook, and I might start a visual journal - yours is so inspiring :)
That would be so great!
Loved the way this went together!
thanks Joyce! I very much enjoyed it.
