For this week’s visual journal, I started with the negative space, with beetroot watercolour paint from Art of Soil. I then moved over to the right side where I imagined a board with “Last Week of School Term” but ended up painting over that with charcoal acrylic as I felt that a black board would tie in better with the school vibe. Also I didn’t love the way the word “school” wasn’t centred properly, bad lettering day!

Highlights of the week:

  • Swatching all my pencils and paints to pick which ones I’d take on our summer trip to Cornwall. I took part in a co-swatching call with RAJ KAUR which was so fun and helped me get organised so early. Nice feeling!

  • Choosing amazing books at the library with the boys. These will come in handy when we get “I’m bored” complaints over the summer break. I’m also gathering a whole bunch of little treats and treasures (and old Lego magazines) to have in a basket on rotation in our living-room as a “boredom-buster station”. We’ll see how we get on with that.

  • Picking garden blooms for the boys’ teachers (these are the blooms I drew today). I shared these on my NOTES this week.

  • Our church had a Community Fun Day which was incredible, it had all the best features of a traditional Fair. Candy floss, bouncy castles, wipe out inflatable… and some older style stands too. I drew this from memory when we got home with 3 materials (thinking of the challenge taking place at the minute, thanks again Adam Ming for the reminder). Some really bad drawings here but I love the feel of it and would love to paint this many times and larger at some point.

    A few ANNOUNCEMENTS:

  • Welcome to new subscribers! Lovely to have you join!

  • I’ve paused the paid subscriptions until end of August as I’m taking a break from posting here for the summer. This is so that I can spend time with my kids on the beach and have wild adventures. I will have a lot to share when we’re back, including a lots of videos from our trip to Cornwall.

  • Which brings me to the launch of my CREATIVE CLUB: I wanted you guys to be the first to know… it will…

    LAUNCH this SEPTEMBER!!!

As schools go back, we will be getting creative too! I’ll be posting more info in my NOTES on what it will include from mid-August. I will host a Q&A on it too. So much to look forward to!!!

  • Finally, I’ve been keeping this a little secret but this October I’m going to an artist-in-residence in Italy on an organic farm just north of Rome which overlooks ancient olive groves. It’s just a dream come true! And I can’t wait to share more.

Hope you have a lovely summer and I’ll see you again soon xx
