This Week's Visual Journals

Last Week of 2024

Hello and welcome to my very last visual journal of 2024!

I hope you’re well and enjoying some down time in between Christmas and New Year - that time of year when no-one quite knows what day it is and that’s ok! I write to you from a messy desk, drinking coffee and still in my pjs on a very misty morning. Our week has been busy in our home with family staying and preparations for Christmas Day. I tried really hard to prep early so that I could stay calm on the day and I think I achieved it, though Boxing Day this year was more joyful with a sense of relief and rest.

As a little Christmas extra, I’m sharing an impromptu behind-the-scenes ramble with you here in a 9min video, explaining how I set up my desk before recording taking into consideration natural light and the shadows it causes and talking through a few details about my creative process, including showing you a few tins friends surprised me with for Christmas, following my recent Tiny Tinned Treasures chat with Margaux Kent from Peg&Awl.

Highlights of the week

  • winter solstice celebration (mainly just me dancing inside because I love to think that days are getting longer now)

  • taking a walk on my own when the sun was shining and the wind was blowing on the holly. I felt very much alive.

  • picking up some fish&chips - completely delightful to enjoy this with my parents and Mike’s mum staying with us.

  • walking in the woods with my boys and dad on Christmas Eve. The recent storms had left a beautiful display of pine needles on the pathway, perfect for us to pick and place on our Christmas dinning table.

  • delivering last minute Christmas cards to neighbours at sunset with Caleb. The birds were making some seriously wonderful sounds and it was truly magical.

  • giving handmade gifts on Christmas Day. The day itself was fun but one of my favourite moments was retreating to read the first few pages of a lovely edition of Pride and Prejudice.

  • enjoying Boxing Day to the max. Splendid left-overs and happy boys, busy playing with their new toys and games. We also all went out for a woodland walk - despite the mist it was great to all be out and stretch our legs and come home to a roaring fire and hot choc&mince pies snack.

  • gardening: clearing leaves and planting little bulbs in my terracotta pots.
