Hi everyone,
I hope you’re had a good week. For us it has been marked by blue skies, golden hues and very cold mornings. In the evenings, we have our wood burner on and are are dreaming up how we’d like to spend our Easter and summer holidays!
In the studio I’ve painted on canvas a cute little orange house I spotted on my walks and have continued to draw inspiration from the Plein Air challenge sketches. I’ve also been considering the workshops I’ll be teaching on the Italian retreat in September and preparing our free online event coming up on Monday 27th January, 7pm GMT which you’re all invited to (sign up here)!
Overcoming fears of saying something very silly, I went LIVE with Emma Carpendale on Substack to chat about our upcoming meet ‘Art of Noticing’ (exclusive to our paying members) Tuesday 21st January 7pm GMT. Do join!

Today I thought I’d share with you some thoughts prior to drawing my visual journals, some of the colours I want to use and some of my sketches from the Plein Air Challenge I’m using as reference. The second video below is a Timelapse of me actually creating my journals. The third is a video with a few thoughts post journaling.

Highlights of the week
What has your week been like? How would you capture some of it?
Highlights of my week include:
reading an email from Substack saying I’d become a bestseller! I can’t thank the club members enough, I’ll be posting a thank you post in coming days.
a family trip to the Yorkshire Wildlife Park and eating the best donuts ever!
having dinner with friends - it’s a treat to have good friends who also like to eat well, isn’t it?
continuing the Plein Air Challenge and noticing some beautiful fences and an orange house
watching the mimosas starting to bloom in our garden
refining a palette with Neocolor II pastels
Going LIVE here on Substack with Emma Carpendale was so fun!!
watching a video on tone by Emma Carlisle (she has a 7-day free trial at the minute, don’t walk, run!!)
Sandi Hester’s insight in her YouTube channel Bits of An Artist’s Life is a delight (you know this from the gazette links, I’m a fan!!) and she also talks about tone a lot. Well worth a watch (or many, many).

I hope you’ll have restful weekend and will manage to get outdoors a little, even for a bit.
Talk soon friends,
xx
